The GOP achieved the necessary 218 votes to take the lead in the House on Wednesday, a week and a day following the midterm elections in the USA.
House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy declared, “The Republicans have officially flipped the House of the People! Americans are ready for a new direction and House Republicans are ready to deliver.”
Both major press agencies, AP and Reuters, confirmed the outcome, based on projections from Edison Research following the Republican win in California’s 27th district.
President Joe Biden promptly congratulated McCarthy, expressing his readiness to collaborate with House Republicans to achieve results for working families, as stated in a release from the White House.
Biden highlighted the recent election as a demonstration of American democracy’s strength and resilience, emphasizing a rejection of election denialism, political violence, and intimidation.
“The will of the people prevails in the United States,” asserted the president. “The future is too promising for us to engage in political strife.”
While the Republicans have gained control of the lower house, they are expected to hold their slimmest majority in the 21st century. This outcome stands in stark contrast to the landslide victory the party had anticipated before this year’s midterm elections, aiming to reshape its agenda by leveraging Biden’s economic challenges and waning popularity.
Looking ahead, President Joe Biden will navigate a landscape of divided government for the next two years, alongside the Democratic Party’s success in the Senate race.
