At their inaugural joint rally in Philadelphia, Vice President Kamala Harris, now a presidential contender, alongside her chosen vice presidential candidate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, addressed a large audience.
Walz expressed his enthusiasm about their partnership to over 12,000 attendees, as reported by Harris’s campaign team. “It’s a privilege to join this dynamic ticket,” he remarked, bringing a wave of excitement to the gathering.
During her speech, Harris highlighted her search for a vice president who embodies the vision of a hopeful future, ultimately choosing Governor Walz for his leadership qualities and his roots in Minnesota.
Despite his initial obscurity on the national scene, Walz’s recent media presence and relatable Midwestern background have made him a prominent choice for Harris’s vice presidency. This announcement was made official just hours before their Philadelphia rally, with the election looming in just over three months.
At the event, Walz did not shy away from critiquing the Republican opposition, particularly former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, eliciting laughter and applause with his remarks. Walz criticized the increase in violent crime under Trump’s administration and humorously contrasted his own genuine Midwestern upbringing with Vance’s elite educational and financial background.
Harris took the opportunity to outline Walz’s diverse experiences, from his military service in the Army National Guard to his long tenure as a high school teacher and his advisory role in a school’s gay-straight alliance.
She also introduced new elements into her campaign rhetoric aimed at attracting a broad spectrum of voters, emphasizing a commitment to inclusivity across all American communities.
Following the announcement of Walz as her running mate, the campaign saw a surge in activity, launching new promotional materials and advertisements to bolster their newly formed ticket.
The rally also featured significant endorsements, with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a close contender for the vice presidential spot, voicing strong support for the Harris-Walz ticket.
Since the selection of Walz, the Harris campaign reported a significant fundraising boost, although it still represents a fraction of what was collected in the previous month.
The selection of Walz comes after an intense vetting process involving several prominent Democrats, marking a pivotal moment in the campaign, especially in the wake of President Biden’s withdrawal from the race after a challenging debate.
Harris acknowledged the swift and intense pace of the current campaign phase at the rally. “We’ve quickly geared up for a rigorous campaign, and now our focus is on winning the general election,” she stated, signaling a robust start to their campaign efforts.
